Weekly Accountability sheet

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Last post I said I was working on a form for my boys to fill out what they have accomplished each week and so I’m sharing that today. You can see I have the Weekly Accountability sheet at the front of their assignment binders.102_3371
First, let me explain why I decided on this form. I had used a variation of a checklist from donnayoung.org’s site in the past. The only problem was that I wasn’t staying on top of it to see that everything was checked off every day. And there was no incentive for my boys to show it to me and make sure I checked it. With an accountability sheet I am putting the work (accountability) on them and making it their responsibility to complete and show to me. Come Monday morning if I don’t have a completed sheet (showing completed work) from the previous week then there will be consequences. I’m going to start by saying no electronics for the week. No electronics as in, no tv, no computer, no psp, no wii! Since the time-suckers will be gone they should be able to complete their work that week!

Explanation for my sheet:

1. The column that says “corrected” is for them to check off once the assignment has been corrected.

2. In math, I let me kids self-check their work. So I have a spot for them to write their initial score before correcting their work. They write it as a fraction. (25/28 means they got 25 problems correct out of a possible 28 problems)

3. I’ve tried using a time limit and an assigned amount of work each day. Time seems to work better for us so this sheet has space to record time. I do however want them to finish the assigned days work. But if I feel they were diligent with their time then I consider that good. Of course, not everyone structures their day this way!

4. Weekly jurisdiction is what some call chores. But in our house it is a room. Someone has the kitchen, someone has the living room and someone has the main bathroom. It is their job to keep their assigned room clean along with their bedroom.

5. Approved: this is for mom or dad to sign and date. I’m even thinking about an award or treat for every X number of completed forms done in a row or something along that line so that I can get them motivated a little! We’ll see how well that works!

Assignment binders

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

We’ve been trying to really use an assignment binder for school for a couple of years. I’m always changing things to make it work better. While I wait on the baby I’m updating the boys books for next year. These are half-size binders (5 1/2″ x 8″) so they are easier to carry around and use. I let them use scrapbook paper to decorate the covers. Here is a picture of my younger son’s who likes to play soccer.

I make tabs for each subject and use a quarterly form that shows the plan for the year. Here is an example of one I typed up for CQLA. The goal is to complete one box every day. I keep a master of this form in my teacher binder and one in theirs so they can cross off each box. I’m working on a sheet for them to record what they’ve completed each week to turn in to me to help me stay on top of it all. I’ll have to post that in a few days.

that’s Character Quality Language Arts!102_3369

I’m not much for workbooks, but CQLA seems to work for us. Maybe because I’m not much into teaching Language Arts and so far this has been the best fit for us. When you buy CQLA you get a shrink-wrapped, 3 holed pile of papers–over 1000 pages! Last year we put these in a big 3 inch binder and then used a small 1/2 inch binder to keep a few weeks worth to work on. But this year I decided to split each unit (8) up and use my binding machine to make eight individual workbooks. I think this will work so much better!

I'm back…

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Tyler Birthday Bash 09I doubt I have any readers left, but just in case I thought I’d write where I’ve been for the last several months.

Currently, I’m awaiting the birth of our fifth child and it seems life has swept me away. I was sick in the beginning and then just plain tired! School has been on the backburner the whole time. We struggled just to get the basics done and are trying to catch up some over the summer. I’m anxious to get life organized and back to normal–but I know a new normal will have to be found!

Fall plans for school: We are planning to get started after Labor Day with Tapestry of Grace, Year Four. I’m also trying to get the boys to work some on their Singapore math and CQLA this summer since we were behind in those subjects, but either way we’ll be continuing that this fall. I’m trying to come up with a reading list for Tapestry and Literature. I’ve also been working on my bible curriculum. I have the outline of the book done and am very pleased with it. I was hoping to publish and ebook with it, but don’t know if that day will ever come.

Life is so much more than school, and somehow through it all the kids need to learn. But just this week at church I’m reminded that through God’s grace He bestows understanding. Our intellectual minds are just foolishness!

I Corinthians 3:19a  “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.”

1 Corinthians 2:14 “The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
